The fate of Edappadi K Palaniswami government in Tamil Nadu will be decided by the Madras High Court on Thursday when it pronounces its verdict on the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs owing allegiance to TTV Dhinakaran by Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal.

The bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar will deliver the verdict on Thursday. The bench had reserved the verdict on January 24 this year.

The judgment is keenly awaited by the opposition parties in the state as it would decide the future of the Palaniswami government which survives on a wafer-thin majority in the House whose strength is reduced from 234 to 216 members following the disqualification of the 18 legislators.

The ruling AIADMK government will be forced to take a floor test if the court quashes the disqualification of the MLAs. If the disqualification is upheld, it would mean bypoll to 18 constituencies which would test the popularity of the Palaniswami government and provide an opportunity for the opposition to increase its tally. The ruling AIADMK has 116 members while DMK along with Congress and IUML has 98 members in the house of 216.

Sources in the ruling AIADMK said they were in talks with the disqualified legislators to lure them back into their folds. Thanga Tamilselvan, one of the disqualified legislator, dismissed the claim of the government saying that all the 18 MLAs had suffered a lot in the last nine months that they would not leave Dhinakaran. "We have 25 MLAs on our side including 18 disqualified and Dhinakaran who won from RK Nagar assembly seat," he said. He, however, did not rule out a patch up with the ruling AIADMK if they agree for a change of chief minister and five other cabinet ministers including O Panneerselvam.
