A 14-month-old toddler died after falling and getting trapped inside a deep borewell, as a marathon rescue operation mounted by the Army and district officials ended in failure near Chhattarpur on Thursday night.

The toddler accidentally fell into the borewell while playing in an agriculture field last evening at village Lidhora under Bhagwa Police station area in the district. He was stuck at a depth of about 18 feet, said Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ravindra Choukse. District officials launched a rescue operation to save the child, Krishna Lodhi, and later, Army jawans were also pressed into service.

The rescue team dug a parallel pit with the help of JCB machines. However, the operation was hampered due to the presence of a large stone which rescuers later managed to break to reach to the boy and he was taken at out around 9 PM, Choukse said. The child was rushed to Bada Malhera Government Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, he said.

A medical team constantly supplied oxygen to the trapped boy with the help of a pipe, but it was not enough to save him. The borewell was dug about two months back and when no water was found, it was abandoned. The field housing the borewell belongs to a labourer, who was not in the village when the incident occurred, a local resident said.
