A day after facing the ire of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court for its failure to check assault on teachers and violence in Lucknow University campus, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday removed the Lucknow SSP Deepak Kumar. Amit Pathak or Kalanidhi Naithani is likely to replace him.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth summoned the Principal Secretary Home Arvind Kumar and the DGP O.P. Singh on Friday night and directed them to remove district police chiefs who have failed to check law and order. On Saturday afternoon, the SSP Lucknow was the first to get the marching order.

On Wednesday, about a dozen teachers, including the Vice-Chancellor Lucknow University S.P. Singh was assaulted by a group of about 50 expelled students and outsiders. Before the incident, the VC had informed the SSP office about outsiders indulging in violence in the campus and sought police help. But SSP Deepak Kumar did not send any force in time resulting in students thrashing teachers.

A two-member Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court comprising of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan had taken suo motu cognizance of the assault on the teachers and had summoned the SSP Deepak Kumar and others in the court. The court had pulled up the SSP for his failure to check violence in the campus despite being informed by the varsity administration.

When the SSP tried to offer an explanation, the court got infuriated and observed that “you had police posted in the campus but it did not act when teachers were assaulted and outsiders indulged in violence.” The Chief Minister took serious note of the High Court's observations and directed to remove SSP Deepak Kumar. “Shunt anyone who is failing to discharge duties in maintaining law and order,” the Chief Minister told the DGP.
