Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Alok Prasad, son of former Rajasthan Governor Sukhdev Prasad, was sent to judicial custody.  UP Police said that Alok in 'provoked' self-immolation near Vidhan Bhavan in Lucknow.  UP Police has charged him for criminal conspiracy and abetting a 35-year-old woman.

The woman from Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district suffered almost 90% burn injuries in this effort. The victim was admitted to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital, where she succumbed late Wednesday night.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Central, Somen Burma, said the former Governor's son was arrested from his Gomti Nagar residence on Wednesday night and remanded to judicial custody after being produced in court on Thursday afternoon.

Alok Prasad is the President of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Cell of the UP Congress and the second Congressman to be booked for similar events in the last three months.

The DCP stated that a preliminary FIR against Alok Prasad was lodged under Section 306/511 of the Indian Penal Code to incite a woman who was trying to commit self-immolation later changed to section 306 for suicide, as well as section 120B for criminal conspiracy.

A senior police officer investigating the case said that Alok Prasad had been in contact with the woman for the past few days. He had instigated self-immolation to draw the state government's attention to this case. He said that Prasad's call record also proves that he was in touch with the woman.

The officer said that the woman was protesting against an Asif Raza and claimed that he left her after marriage and went to Dubai.

She said that she was previously married to Akhilesh Kumar and got into a relationship with Asif after separating from her husband a few years ago. It is believed that she stayed with Asif for a few months and also changed her name. However, Asif's family disapproved of their relationship, she alleged.

The official said police are still verifying whether the woman married Asif before moving to Saudi Arabia a few months ago.

The officer alleged that Alok Prasad had also staged a protest outside the woman's partner's house. The Maharajganj police had video footage of the incident, accusing him of setting the woman on fire provoked.

Earlier, on July 17, a 50-year-old woman resident of Amethi district and her 28-year-old daughter set themselves on fire in front of Gate No. 3 of Vidhan Bhavan, alleging police excesses. While the 50-year-old woman died in a civil hospital five days after the incident, her daughter survived.

Congress leader Anup Patel and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) politician Qadir Khan and two relatives of the woman were booked for abetment to suicide section 306 of the IPC and criminal conspiracy on July 18 under 120B.
