Left Front Chairman Biman Bose announced the name of the candidates in a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday. They have not fielded any candidates in four seats where Congress has sitting MPs - Malda Uttar, Malda Dakshin, Jangipur and Berhampore. However, Congress in a list announced on Monday evening has fielded candidates from two seats where Left won last time.

Left is giving 24 hours to Congress for seat sharing, till tomorrow 4:30 pm. Only after that Left will say whether the talks on seat sharing can continue or not. If Congress does not withdraw candidates on the two seats - Raigunj and Murshidabad, then Left will field candidates in the four seats, said senior party sources.

Earlier seat-sharing talks broke down, when Left unilaterally announced candidates for 25 seats. But what particularly irked Congress that Left announcing the name of head of the Congress state unit’s Medical Cell as the Birbhum candidate.  Soon, Bengal state Congress decided to go alone and the decision was ratified by Central leadership in a meeting attended by Rahul and Sonia Gandhi.

However, many believe that all is not lost as CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is still trying to negotiate with Rahul Gandhi. Essentially the bone of contention is couple of seats and since both the parties are fighting for their political existence in Bengal, going alone will be detrimental for them.
