Ahead of crucial Gujarat polls, the BJP got a shot in the arm when it registered an unprecedented victory making a near clean sweep in urban local bodies polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Significantly, those who had written off the BSP, Mayawati bounced back and staged a magnificent comeback securing the second spot in polls, which it fought after 17 years on its symbol.

After results, the BSP emerged as the main opposition party relegating the Samajwadi Party to the third spot.

The SP could not win even a single mayoral seat while it was much behind the BSP in electing Chairmen in 198 Nagar Palikas and 438 Nagar Panchayats. The results have come as a major setback to party president Akhilesh Yadav, who was claiming to thrash BJP in the local bodies polls before nailing it down in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Though Congress Vice-President did not come even for once to Uttar Pradesh for party’s campaign, the results have come as a rude shock to the party ahead of Gujarat polls. The Congress was wiped out in Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency Amethi.

The Amethi Nagar Palika seat was wrested by the BJP while SP won the Gauraiganj. It could not win a single mayoral seat and came a poor fourth in results declared for polls in Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayat.

BJP candidates won 14 out 16 mayor seats while the BSP was wrested two from the saffron party. For the first time, Lucknow got its first lady mayor in 100 years when BJP candidate Sanyukta Bhatia defeated Samajwadi Party candidate Meera Vardhan.

The BJP won prestigious Ayodhya-Faizabad seat when its candidate Rishikesh Updhayaya defeated SP transgender candidate Gulshan Bindu.

The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had begun his poll campaigning from Ayodhya, which elected its first mayor on Friday.

The BJP also won Mathura-Vrindavan seat, which went to mayoral polls for the first time. The party also won prestigious Varanasi mayor seat in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency. It also won the Gorakhpur seat in home town of CM Yogi.

Other mayoral seats where BJP candidates emerged victorious include Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Allahabad, Agra, Kanpur, Ferozabad, Bareilly and Jhansi.

Mayawati, however, checked BJP's onward march when it wrested Aligarh and Meerut mayoral seats from the BJP. Mohd Furqan and in Aligarh and Sunita Varma in Meerut defeated BJP candidates with a comfortable margin.

In 2012 urban local bodies polls, the BJP had won 12 out of 14 mayoral seats.

Out of 198 Nagar Palika Chairmen seats, the BJP won 100, BSP 42, SP 20, Congress 6 and others 30. Similarly, out of 438 Nagar Panchayat Chairmen posts, BJP won 137, BSP 108, SP 60, Congress 40 and others 118.
