Adrift in middle of sea, a man survives against all odds. This may sound like ‘Life of Pi’, the movie directed by legendary Ang Lee, except that it is not!

This is very much an actual event that happened in Karnataka. An extremely lucky fisherman who goes by the name Nagarajan swam for nearly seven hours to stay alive off the Kudla coast.

According to a report in Times of India, the fisherman fell asleep and fell off his trawler in mid sea on August 16.

It was much later that his fellow fishermen realised that he was missing. Soon, rescue boats were mobilized. But for nearly three hours, none of the rescuers could spot Nagarajan.

He could see three boats moving away from him. Though he tried, he could not draw their attention,” Nagarajan's boss Vasanth S Salian was quoted as saying by Times of India.

The gutsy fisherman didn’t lose his calm and kept on swimming. He could feel sea creature moving along, but he didn’t panic. After seven unimaginable hours of swimming, Nagarajan was spotted by a merchant vessel that later took him to contacted the New Mangalore Port authority officials.

The rescue operation must have been very arduous as the state has witnessed flood after neighbouring Kerala. Kodagu district in Karnataka is the worst-hit. However, with rains subsiding now, relief and rehabilitation work gained momentum today inthe flood and landslips ravaged Kodagu.

The torrential rains that lashed the district lastweek left a huge trail of destruction, claiming atleast 12 lives and rendering thousands homeless.

With all major roads in Kodagu blocked, amassive rescue operation had been underway for the last coupleof days to rescue those stranded in isolated and hillyterrain.

As of yesterday, over 4,320 people were rescuedand brought to relief centres. Officials said 41 relief centres in Kodagu and nine in Dakshina Kannada, another flood-hit district, have been set up where 6,620 people are sheltered.
