Emboldened by the BSP-SP alliance, the Samajwadi Party President and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced to contest again from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, which is being represented by his wife Dimple Yadav.

“My father (Mulayam Singh Yadav) has already announced to contest from Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, I will contest from Kannauj. The final decision in this regard would be taken by the party Central Committee,” he said while talking to media in Lucknow.

The SP Chief also claimed that the alliance with the BSP would be extended further by including the Congress and other like-minded parties also in the fight against the Communal forces, led by the BJP.

Yadav’s announcement came close on his retirement as MLC from UP Legislative Council on May 5. This means that the former Chief Minister will not be in the fray for renewing his membership to the Upper House and instead contest from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat from where he had started his political career in 2000 Lok Sabha by-polls.

Later, after representing the seat thrice in 2000, 2004 and 2009, he had resigned from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in 2012 when he became the youngest Chief Minister in the country at the age of 38 years. The Kannauj Lok Sabah seat is now being represented by his wife Dimple Yadav who was elected unopposed in 2012 by-polls and won in 2014 too despite Modi wave.

Last year, the SP Chief had announced that his wife Dimple Yadav will not contest Lok Sabha polls again in 2019 to 'slap on the faces of his critics' allegations of promoting nepotism'. While Akhilesh has decided to contest from Kannauj, his father Mulayam Singh Yadav is shifting his parliamentary constituency from Azamgarh to Mainpuri, the SP citadel.

Yadav’s decision to contest Lok Sabha polls and jump into national politics has surprised many in the party as BSP has already set a condition for BSP-SP alliance that Akhilesh Yadav will remain in Uttar Pradesh while Behenji (As Mayawati is fondly called) will try her hands in the national politics.
