Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Final phase of polls in Assam on April 24

The third and the final phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam is scheduled on April 24. With just two days to go for the final balloting battle, here's an overview of the Assam elections.

Six constituencies will go to polls in the third phase – Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Gauhati, Mangaldoi and Nawgong. The major political parties in the fray are the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). 

Sixteen women candidates, the highest since the first general elections, are contesting in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Assam. Out of which, nine are in the fray in the final phase of the polls. The women candidates in the third phase include All India Trinamool Congress's Zesmina Khatun from Dhubri, SUCI(C)'s Khurshida Anowara Begum from Barpeta, BJP's Bijoya Chakravorty and Samajwadi Party's Bandana Barman Barua from Gauhati, and Aam Aadmi Party's Namrata Sarma and SUCI(C)'s Swarnalata Chaliha from Mangaldoi. There are also a lot of independent candidates in Assam. Of the total 170 candidates in 14 parliamentary constituencies, as many as 65 are independent candidates. 

The key election issues in Assam include the recurring flood and erosion problem, housing for the poor, welfare schemes for tea garden workers, Adivasis, backward classes and Self Help Group (SHG) scheme. The BJP promises change and development in Assam, to fight corruption, seal the Indo-Bangladesh border, grant refugee status to the victims of religious, social and political atrocities in Bangladesh. The Congress candidates are addressing the economic reforms undertaken by the UPA, eradication of poverty schemes, MNREGA and social justice measures, during their election campaigns. The Asom Gana Parishad is focussing on the illegal migration from Bangladesh as its poll issue.

Assam witnessed brisk polling in the first two phases of the Lok Sabha elections. Approximately 75% of the electorate exercised their franchise in the first phase held on April 7. The second phase of elections took place on April 12 and around 72% of voters cast their ballots
