Lok Sabha Election 2019: In last of 2-phase polling, over 60% voting recorded in Rajasthan

Ganganagar recorded 74.19 per cent voter turnout followed by Jaipur with 68.33 percent and then Alwar with 66.67 percent

Rajasthan witnessed a voter turnout of 63.78 per cent in fifth phase of Lok Sabha election on Monday, where two former Olympians are among the 134 candidates in the fray.  In the last-phase in the state 12 seats out of 25 parliamentary constituencies went for poll. On April 29, 13 seats had witnessed voting. 

Ganganagar recorded 74.19 per cent voter turnout followed by Jaipur with 68.33 percent and then Alwar with 66.67 percent. Except Bharatpur where voter turnout was 58.37 percent and Karauli-Dholpur with 54.53 percent, all other parliamentary constituencies out of 12 recorded voter turnout more than 60 percent.     

Polling began at 7 am in Ganganagar, Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur rural, Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, Dausa and Nagaur seats. Ganganagar, Bikaner, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur are reserved for SC whereas Dausa is reserved for ST. A total 134 candidates, including 16 women candidates are contesting for these 12 Lok Sabha seats. As many as 23,738 polling stations have been set up in the state for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The candidates include two former Olympians, Union Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Krishna Poonia in Jaipur rural seat, and former IAS officer Arjun Ram Meghwal and ex-IPS officer Madangopal Meghwal in Bikaner.

Rathore is banking on the “Modi factor” for his re-election from the Jaipur rural seat and has highlighted national security as the key issue during the hustings. The seat, which Rathore won in 2014 with a margin of 3.32 lakh votes, is dominated by the Jat community.

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is facing a tough fight from his cousin and Congress candidate Madangopal Meghwal in Bikaner.

VOTER STRENGTH

A total of 2.30 crore voters across these 12 constituencies were eligible to decide the fate of the 134 candidates, among whom 16 are women.
