While Citizenship Amendment Bill was the primary issue in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections in eight states of the Northeast, closer to the polling date, the anger seemed to have died down. On the first day of polling, 13 of the region's 25 parliamentary seats went to polls.

As per data released by deputy election commissioner Sudeep Jain at the end of the day, by 5 pm the voter turnout in the lone seats that went to polls in Tripura was 81.8%, in Sikkim 69%, Nagaland 78%, and in Manipur 78.2% respectively. In the five seats that went to the polls in Assam, the turnout was 68%.

Assam chief election officer Mukesh Chandra Sahu told reporters that while there were reports of malfunctioning of EVMs from some booths and defective machines have been replaced, the turnout is set to rise as there were queues in poll booths at 5 pm.

"As per the initial reports, around 100 VVPATS were replaced, while 20 units of control and ballot units were changed. The control unit and ballot unit are changed in pair always. These figures are also likely to go up slightly as we have not received the final numbers from the centres yet," he said.

While polling in five seats was going on, PM Modi had two campaign rallies at Assam, prompting former CM Tarun Gogoi to complain that this is a violation of the model code of conduct (MCC)

In Nagaland, elections took place in the lone parliamentary seat as well as by-elections in the Aonglenden assembly seat. Tripura registered record voting numbers for the Tripura West seat, and in Sikkim, apart from its lone parliamentary seat, simultaneous polls took place in the 32 assembly seats.

In Manipur, amidst tight security, polling took place in the reserved seat of Outer Manipur, and in Meghalaya, both the seats -- Tura and Shillong -- went to the polls.
