This year, the age-old festival of Lohri is being celebrated with pomp and show at various schools and colleges in Amritsar, stressing the need to educate girls to make them self-reliant.
Girl students clad in colourful traditional attires participated in singing and dancing and organised a kite-flying competition.
"Earlier this festival was celebrated for boys. But now, as there is no difference between a boy child and a girl, we all have come to our school to celebrate Lohri," a student told ANI.
To abolish malpractices of female foeticide, several institutions dedicated the festival to the girl child.
"We want to request people to stop female infanticide and child marriage and encourage girls to excel in their lives. They should be given a chance to study and lead a good life," another student said.
