A study of the CCTV footage at the convent in the Ranaghat sub-division shows four persons allegedly committing the crime.

Nun gang rape case: Top Cardinal says culprits must be brought to justice

Catholic Bishop's Conference of India president Cardinal Baselios Cleemis on Wednesday said the culprits behind the gang rape of an elderly nun in West Bengal's Nadia district must be brought to justice. "I, being the President of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India, would like to assure our reverend sisters here that the whole church in India, the whole community is with them and also we would like to ensure that justice is done and justice brought to the people who are affected," said Cardinal Baselios Cleemis. National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to West Bengal government seeking a report in connection of the alleged gang rape of a nun in the state.

According to an official statement released on, NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, West Bengal calling for reports in the matter within two weeks. The notice was issued after the commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 71-year-old nun was raped by a gang of seven dacoits inside a Convent in Gangnapur village of Nadia district in West Bengal on March 14.

Reportedly, the victim along with another nun tried to thwart the robbery attempt on the premises of the Convent. However, the dacoits tied up the other nun and raped the victim in front of her. They also decamped with Rs 12 lakh with 10 to 12 lakh rupees in cash.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of victim. A CID probe was ordered into the incident.

The District SP had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh to any individual providing credible information leading to the arrest of the accused.

Fifteen persons have so far been detained, Nadia district superintendent of police Arnab Ghosh said. A police team has been sent outside the state in connection with the investigation. The CCTV footage at the convent had shown four persons who were allegedly involved in the crime. The SP had announced a reward of Rs one lakh to any individual providing information leading to the arrest of the accused.

Hospital superintendent A K Mondol had said yesterday that a medical board has been formed for her treatment and she is being given counselling. Her spiritual counselling by a Christian missionary from Rome is also on, he said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the nun on Monday. The 71-year-old nun was allegedly gangraped by dacoits at Gangnapur in the early hours on Saturday after which a CID probe was ordered into the incident.
