Government open to accepting "good" suggestions on land law, says Gadkari

Faced with fierce attack on the land acquisition ordinance, government on Wednesday said it was ready to deliberate on opposition suggestions and "go the extra mile" to prevent any injustice to farmers and to strengthen their hands.

Faced with fierce attack on the land acquisition ordinance, government on Wednesday said it was ready to deliberate on opposition suggestions and "go the extra mile" to prevent any injustice to farmers and to strengthen their hands.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu also said in Lok Sabha that the Ordinance was brought "in the need of emergency" as it was important to kick start the economy which was facing a "developmental holiday" in the last 10 years.

As the opposition to the land acquisition law including from its allies grew, Government today said it is open to accepting "good" suggestions and insisted that the new measure was pro-farmer and pro-poor.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is government's key negotiator, accused opposition parties of double-standards and said almost every state government run by them, including Congress, had written to the Centre against the previous land law brought in by the UPA.

"We are open to accepting good suggestions offered by other parties. If people have some opinion on social impact assessment or consent clauses, we are willing to hear them," he told reporters.

MPCC takes dig at Sena for opposing land ordinance

Maharashtra Congress today took a dig at Shiv Sena for opposing Land Acquisition Ordinance, saying the party was part of the Union Cabinet which approved it in the first place.

"There is more to it than meets the eye. They probably want to achieve something at the state level for which they are using the opportunity," Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesman Ratnakar Mahajan said.

He said the Sena was a part of the Cabinet which approved the Ordinance.

Government trying to 'mislead' people on Land Acquisition Act: Anna Hazare 

Social activist Anna Hazare, who is spearheading agitation against amendments in the Land Acquisition Act, today rubbished Government's claim that these were more "effective" and "farmer-friendly", saying it was trying to mislead the people.

Hazare said the BJP government has misled people on several fronts including the black money issue and decentralisation of power, while asking for votes in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.

The Gandhian activist threatened to go ahead with a nation-wide 'jail bharo andolan' if the government does not pay heed to the demands.

BJP doing 'somersaults' on key legislations: Kamal Nath

Congress leader Kamal Nath accused BJP of doing "somersaults" on important legislations like Land Aquisition and Insurance Bills and said it had changed its stance on these issues in just nine months of being in power.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, Nath also said that the decision of Rahul Gandhi, who is on a two-week "leave" and has given the session a miss, to introspect on issues would be beneficial for the Congress.

After Anna, Cong leaders hit the streets on land law New Delhi

Stepping up pressure on the government, Congress leaders took to the streets here and held a protest against the land acquisition law, saying it was against the interests of farmers.

The protest at Jantar Mantar comes a day after Anna Hazare concluded his two-day demonstration yesterday opposing the land ordinance as well as the bill proposed by the NDA government.

"The Bill is anti-farmer. We will not accept it. The government must protect the interest of the farmers," said Congress' Raj Babbar addressing the protesters.
Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Digvijay Singh and Subodh Kant Sahay are among those leading the protest.

NCP opposes changes in Land Act

NCP today said it has "reservations" regarding changes made in provisions like consent clause and social impact assessment in the land acquisition Act because of which it would not support the Bill introduced by the government. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that the party would inform government of its stand when it discusses the proposed legislation with all parties
