Chhattisgarh Assembly elections result 2013 - BJP defeats Congress in Chhattisgarh riding on Raman Singh's popularity

It turned out to be a black Sunday for the Congress as it lost Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and finally Chattisgarh as well to BJP.

The only saving grace for the Congress seemed to be Chhattisgarh where the Congress was in a neck-and-neck race with the BJP.

But, riding on the popularity of Chief Minister Raman Singh, BJP managed to defeat Congress here as well. BJP manged to secure 49 seats in the 90-seat assembly. Meanwhile Congress managed to secure 39 seats and remaining two seats were won by independent cadidates. 

In an embarrassment to ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh, five ministers, including Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar, and Deputy Speaker of Assembly Narayan Chandel, lost the assembly election. Read here

A party needs 46 seats to form the government.

* Veteran Congress leader Motilal Vora's son Arun defeats BJP's Hemchand Yadav by a margin of 5,621 votes in Chhattisgarh's Durg city constituency.

* Congress leader Ajit Jogi's son, Amit wins Marwahi seat by defeating BJP's Samira Paikra by a margin 46,250 votes.

* Chhattisgarh agriculture minister Chandrashekhar Sahu of BJP loses to Congress's Dhanendra Sahu in Abhantpur by 8,354 votes

* Congress leaders - Amit Jogi, Satyanarayan Sharma - and BJP leader Amar Agarwal win.

* Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh defeats Congress' Alka Mudaliyar in Rajnandgaon constituency by 35,866 votes. Alka is wife of Congress leader Uday Mudliar, who was killed in naxal attack in Darbha valley under Bastar region May this year. "It is a historic day and I thank people of the state for BJP's hattrick," Singh stated.

* At 2.47 pm, Congress was ahead with 45 seats, BJP: 43.

* At 2.15 pm, BJP and Congress were playing level field with 44 seats each.

* According to latest updates on the Election Commission site, Congress has taken lead with 45 seats, while BJP trails behind at 43.

* While at noon, the Congress appeared to be heading to power, updates at 1.30 pm had BJP  at 47 with Congress trailing at 41.

* The earliest results of NOTA option are out in Chhattisgarh, the state that was first to avail the right. From Raipur Rural constituency represented by BJP's Nandu Sahu, 334 votes were cast for NOTA.

BJP's Ajay Chandrakar wins seat from Kurud constituency.

Congress' Lakheshwar Baghel wins from Bastar with 33,038 votes.

Congress is leading in 46 seats and the BJP in 42 at 12:40 pm.

At 12:05 pm, Congress is leading in 50 seats and the BJP in 38. Others are ahead in two seats.

As per trends available at 11:57 am, Congress is ahead in 48 seats, BJP in 40 and Others in two seats.

Congress is ahead in 44 seats and the BJP in 38, as per trends at 11:50 am.

Congress' Amit Jogi, BJP's Ramvichar Netam and Brijmohan Agarwal are leading.

Chhattisgarh CM Dr Raman Singh is leading with 4,009 votes in Rajnandgaon seat.

Trends at 11:30 am show that Congress is leading in 42 seats and BJP in 37 seats.

At 11:05 am, Congress and BJP are ahead in 36 seats each.

The BJP is able to edge past in 32 seats against the Congress' 30 at 10:53 am.

As per trends at 10:42 am, the opposition Congress is giving a tough fight to the ruling BJP. The Congress is leading in 29 seats and the BJP in 28.

The BJP and the Congress are in a neck-and-neck race for power in Chhattisgarh. With early leads available from 50 of the 90 seats, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and a spirited Congress are leading in 27 and 23 constituencies respectively at 10:23 am.

The opposition Congress is leading in 20 of the 33 seats for which trends were available at 9:40 am as counting is underway of the votes cast in the elections for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly. The ruling BJP is leading in 13 seats.

The opposition Congress is leading in 24 of the 47 seats for which trends were available at 10:04 am. The BJP is leading in 23 seats.

At 9:29 am, the trends indicate Congress is leading in 11 seats, BJP in nine and Others in one.

As per trends at 9:10 am for 14 out of 90 seats - BJP is ahead in eight, Congress in five and Others in one seat respectively.
