NEW DELHI: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi shot himself in the foot when the BJP vice-president, angry at negative portrayal of politicians, said some women with “lipstick and powder on their faces” were indulging in demonstrations and abusing politicians.

The statement creating a flutter, leaving embarrassed party spokesmen to clarify that it was his personal view.

“Some women wearing lipstick and powder have taken to streets in Mumbai and are abusing politicians, spreading dissatisfaction against democracy. This is what terrorists are doing in Jammu and Kashmir,” Naqvi said.

Giving his own touch to the call for political unity by the BJP and the government, he said, “In difficult times like these”, some groups have decided to “wage a war against democracy” rather than waging a war against the menace of terror. “These are difficult times for the nation. In times like these we should unite in our war against terror and Pak-sponsored attacks, rather than waging a war against democratic institutions,” Naqvi said.

He said demonstrations were one’s right in a democracy, but it was sad to know that some media organisations had joined hands to present politicians in a bad light. The channels were also engaged in presenting unfounded things to rake up a negative image of politicians, he said.

Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy, asked about this “lipstick and powder” remark, sought to downplay Naqvi’s statement. “He did not mean to say that. His words were presented in a wrong contest. The BJP does not subscribe to any such views.”

A woman party leader called Naqvi “a stupid man”.

BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley, visibly uncomfortable, said it was Naqvi’s personal view and the party did not subscribe to it. “The mode and expression used (in giving one’s reaction) should be in politically-acceptable terms,” he said.
