India should not imitate the West and should preserve its culture and heritage to become the world leader, said Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of Zee and Essel Group of Companies Subhash Chandra at a mega cultural festival here on Friday. He was addressing an august gathering at Arth — a festival being organised to celebrate the essence of 'Indic thought and philosophy'.

Arth, a brainchild of Shreyasi Goenka, is a platform for connecting as well as making the youths aware of the rich Indian culture, art, history, rituals and practices. The three-day festival was inaugurated on Friday by Union Culture Minister Dr Mahesh Sharma and Chandra in the presence of Shreyasi Goenka.

MP Chandra called the 'Arth' a festival of the stream carrying the message of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The world is one family).

"Shreyasi came up with the concept and it completely surprised me as it was a dream which I had nurtured for many many years. She and her 'arth' team are doing an excellent job. 'Arth' will become a symbol of celebration among the youth in the country and internationally as well. I wish it reaches international territory," he said.

The Rajya Sabha member emphasised that an ideology can be beautiful but it is important how it gets implemented.

"Communism as an idea was beautiful — that everyone should be equal and treated at par — but it was implemented in an adharmic (irreligious) manner and slowly died and vanished from the face of mother earth," said Chandra.

Writers, intellectuals, diplomats, politicians, journalists, artists have been participating in the festival and also encouraging the youths to come face to face with the Indian culture. For the next two days 'Arth' will be a platform to exchange thoughts on ancient India and New India.
