Left parties including CPI, CPI(M) and SUCI(M) staged a joint protest at Deputy Commissioner's office against Central government's alleged anti-poor policies on Friday.
Accusing the BJP-led Centre of "shamelessly supporting capitalists and corporates", the protesters lamented the hike in service tax, scrapping of property tax and proposal of heavy tax rebate for capitalists.
They also termed the Union budget as "anti-labourer and anti-farmer" and bemoaned the reduction in spending on subsidy, education, health and social sectors in the budget.
The protesters demanded roll-back of petrol-diesel price hike, girdawari and proper compensation for damaged crops due to unseasonal rains and also the scrapping of alleged anti-farmer Land Acquisition Ordinance. The protest was presided over by CPI(M) district secretary Ramesh Chandra, CPI district secretary Prem and Deviram of SUCI(M). CPI(M) leaders Prakash Chandra and Veerbhan also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
