An interesting 22 days await students in around the 2,000 government-run Kendriya Vidyalayas across the nation. As part of its initiative to celebrate the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31 — the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the HRD ministry has mandated that students be taught to speak the 22 constitutionally-recognised Indian languages, one every day.

The aim is to empower students to be able to speak simple sentences and help them connect to other far off remote regions in the country so that a student in Tamil Nadu can converse in simple Kashmiri, while a student in Punjab can hold his own when spoken to in Malayalam.

Additionally, various government departments and PSUs are making arrangements to mark the day with full gaiety and colour. In Delhi, a run from Major Dhynachand Stadium to Parliament Street will be flagged of by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, along the way paying floral tributes to the statue of Sardar Patel. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is also planning to organise a pledge-taking in all Indian Missions along with essay/quiz competitions, debates, short films, photo exhibition, etc.

The Ministry of Railways is also organising a March Past at its Zonal and Divisional headquarters while the National School of Drama will organise a special play on Sardar Patel.

Meanwhile, University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Higher Education Institutes, where NCC units exist, to invite Army Officers/Ex-Army Officers to give a talk on national unity, integrity, security and other related topics. The UGC circular reads, "The occasion provides us an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country."

The pledge, to be taken on this day has been forwarded to the schools and higher education institutes: "I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel."
