In response to BJP's 15 day Janaraksha Yatra campaign against the alleged "atrocities by the ruling CPM" in Kerala against RSS and BJP cadres, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has launched a counter campaign against the alleged "anti-people policies of the central government and violent tactics of the RSS-BJP".

Apparently, the CPM decided to launch the counter campaign after it witnessed more crowd than expected towards the culmination of the Janaraksha Yatra in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

The Yatra was launched by BJP president Amit Shah on October 3 from Kannur but it only gathered steam towards the end of the campaign on October 17. On the final day, the crowd swelled close to 15,000 giving Shah a reason to feel satisfied. Shah also launched a strong attack on the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led LDF government in Kerala.

The BJP has dubbed the LDF campaign as a panic reaction to its Janaraksha campaign. Responding to Shah's challenge of competing with his party on the issue of development in the state, Vijayan said, "We happily accept that challenge. Let Amit Shah make it clear whether any of the BJP-ruled states have made any progress that is comparable to the achievements made in Kerala."

Questioning Shah and Yogi Adityanath on development, Vijayan said, Kerala is competing with developed nations on these parameters and its social indices are the best in India. Kerala has India's highest literacy rate at 93.9 per cent and highest life expectancy rate at 77 years, giving it the best Human Development Index score at 0.712 in 2015.

The LDF campaign began on Saturday with the CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan leading in the northern part of the state, while the south is being headed by CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran.

The CPI (M)'s LDF government is due to meet people over the course of two weeks.
