Lashkar-e-Taiba plot to attack PM Narendra Modi unearthed; IB, Delhi police in joint operation

The Intelligence Bureau (IB), along with the Delhi Police are conducting a joint operation to nab several Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists who plan to attack PM Narendra Modi, says a report in an English daily.

The militants had two plans — to carry out a mass shooting in a Paris-like or 26/11 type attack at a gathering attended by Modi. If he failed to penetrate Modi's cordon, the militant was supposed to blow himself off or hurl a grenade at the crowd.

If this was unsuccessful, the terrorists had been told to target other important dignitaries and officials in Delhi.

The LeT terrorists have slipped into the country via Jammu and Kashmir, the report said.

At least four terrorists had infiltrated into the country last month and were in contact with Lashkar commander Abu Dujana for logistics and ground support, says the report. Jammu and Kashmir police have also been roped in for the investigation.

The nature of the intended attacks point to an ISI-LeT nexus. It could also be that Al Qaeda's India wing is behind the plans.

One of the terrroists was arrested on November 24 during an operation conducted by IB and special operations group (SOG). Shabir Ahmad Malik, the suspect was in Jammu since November 20 and was staying at the house of one Amir Alam Gujjar at Bathindi area of south Kashmir. There were two others as well who were arrested, though their identities are not known.
