Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday criticized the government over the land acquisition ordinance, saying it is not in favour of farmers and labourers.

"Whoever is in the favour of the farmers, whoever is in the favour of the farm labourers, they will protest against this land ordinance," he said.

Ramesh also used the occasion to corner the government over the controversial 'ghar wapsi' drive launched by certain Sangh Parivar outfits.

"Modi Government talks about 'ghar wapsi' but does not talk about giving back the land. What kind of government is this?" he added.

When asked whether the Congress was using this issue to target the government, Ramesh said: "We are a political party, we have political objectives and this is an important political issue for us."

Ramesh, a former union rural development minister, earlier attended a farmers' meeting in Uttar Pradesh's Bhatta Parsaul village

The Congress has so far been alleging that the ordinance promulgated the government takes away the powers given to the farmers by the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, enacted by the UPA-II regime in 2013.
