Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav arrived at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport late Tuesday night, ahead of his hospitalisation on Wednesday. He was accompanied by son Tej Pratap, daughter Misa Bharti, and daughter-in-law Aishwarya.

He will be admitted to Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute, where he had undergone bypass surgery a few years ago, for consultation and treatment. Lalu's family doctor said last week that he may head to Bengaluru for his kidney ailment and later to Delhi for some other treatment.

Lalu, who will turn 70 next month, suffers from over a dozen ailments including hypertension, diabetes, and heart and kidney troubles, and takes around 20 medications on a daily basis.

Lalu is presently serving sentence in three fodder scam related cases and was behind the bars since December 23, 2017. On March 29, he was hospitalised in Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, after his health deteriorated and was later referred to AIIMS, New Delhi, for his treatment.

Lalu's family members including wife and former CM Rabri Devi had alleged that the government was hatching a conspiracy to kill Lalu by not providing him proper treatment during his incarceration and had thus sought bail for getting him better medical care.

On May 11, the Jharkhand High Court had granted a six-week provisional bail to Lalu for his treatment at specialised institutes, though his counsel's had sought a 12-week relief.
