Days after RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav was sentenced to 3.5 years of rigorous imprisonment in a fodder scam case, a controversy has erupted over the 'presence' of two of his aides who 'managed' to get themselves lodged in Ranchi's Birsa Munda jail on petty charges, hours before the former Bihar CM was convicted and sent to the same jail on December 23.

The duo — identified as Lakshman Mahto (cook) and Madan Yadav (attendant) — are said to have landed behind the bars to 'serve' Lalu in prison. "Even the last time Lalu was in jail in another fodder scam case, both of them were already there," senior BJP leader and Bihar health minister Mangal Pandey said after local media highlighted the issue on Tuesday.

Sources said Lakshman and Madan run a small business in Ranchi and aid Lalu during his Ranchi visits for his hearings related to fodder scam cases recently.

A senior Ranchi Police official said an inquiry has been launched into the matter. "They had surrendered in a case pertaining to theft and minor scuffle with a neighbour, which was lodged at Lower Bazaar Police Station. But prima facie it appears to be fake. We will thoroughly probe the matter and appropriate action will be taken," he said. The timing of their case and surrender kicked up the row.

The RJD claimed it to be a 'coincidence'. "How can these things be planned? It is just a coincidence that they are also there," said Abdul Bari Siddiqui, former Bihar finance minister and a senior RJD leader.

However, the BJP and the JD (U) spared no minute to target the RJD and said it exposed the "feudal mindset" of Lalu. "Lalu calls himself a socialist but he has crossed all limits of feudalism by letting two innocent people get imprisoned to serve him. Anyone who knows Lalu knows well that Lakshman is his old cook, who has been preparing his meals in Patna and Delhi too. Lalu and his family members should come out clean on the row," said MLC Sanjay Singh, also the chief spokesperson of JD (U).

Senior BJP leader and deputy CM of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi said a case of fraud should be registered against those who built up the fake case and that both Lalu aides should transferred to different jails to thwart Lalu's designs.
