India is yet to get a response from Pakistan on its demand for a certified copy of the charge-sheet as well as the military court order awarding death sentence to the retired Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav.

“We have sought from the Foreign Ministry (of Pakistan) a certified copy of the charge-sheet as well as the judgement in the death sentence of Jadhav, but there is no response yet from Pakistan’s side,” MEA spokesperson Gopal Baglay told reporters on Sunday.

India had already announced that it would appeal against the death sentence to Jadhav.

Upping the ante further, Pakistan on Sunday said it was sharing a new dossier about Jadhav with the UN and foreign envoys. Reports from Islamabad said the new dossier is based on Jadhav’s early testimonial and statements given in front of the Field General Court Martial about his alleged involvement in espionage and sabotage activities in Karachi and Balochistan. The document contains the attested report of Court Martial General, as well as the court proceedings timeline. The documents will also contain details of arrests and raids done by Pakistan security agencies on Jadhav’s tip-offs. “The dossier will be handed over to different ambassadors in Islamabad. The Pakistani envoys across the world will also present it to their host states,” a Pakistani media report added.

Meanwhile, the intelligence community here has asked the government to abandon practice of unilateral release of Pakistani prisoners. A note sent to ministries of home and external affairs, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has suggested amendments in the Foreigners Act and Criminal Procedure Code to allow continued detention of Pakistani prisoners, held under the charges of spying or terrorist activities. The note, though sent much before the Jadhav issue surfaced, recommends to de-link process of releasing prisoners after completing their sentence.

Former Special Director of IB Rajinder Kumar asked the government to release these prisoners only in exchange of Indian prisoners rather than an automatic judicial route. “It has been our experience that most of the repatriated terrorists were recycled into terrorism once they reached Pakistan,” the official said. Meanwhile in Bhubaneswar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the government would leave no stones unturned to get Jadhav back to India alive.
