Konkan Railway (KR), which currently has fewer stations than what its route length ideally requires, will soon be getting two more stations to rectify the anomaly. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu recently laid the foundation stone for the construction of Kadwai station in Maharashtra and Innanje in Karnataka.

The proposed Kadwai station is located between Sangameshwar and Aravali Road stations in Sangameshwar Taluka, Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra. It will be constructed at a total cost of Rs9.75 cr and is likely to be completed within 24 months. The commissioning of this station will benefit about 25 villages in and around Kadwai Station, said KR officials.

The second station, Innanje, is situated between Padubidri and Udupi stations of KR. The station will be constructed at a total cost of Rs11.34cr and will serve Shankarapura, Subashnagar, Katpadi, Manchakal, Shirva, Paduvur villages. "At present the commuters at Innaje are dependent on Udupi station for their commute to Mumbai and Bengaluru. For this they have to travel around 12 kms by road from Innanje to Udupi which is cumbersome and costly," said an official..

"With the construction of these two new stations, it will help in the development, communication as well as connectivity of the adjoining villages," said Siddheshwar Telugu, general manager (administration) of KR.

Earlier in March this year, KR got a new station at Veravali, situated between Adavali and Vilawade stations on the KR route. The station was a long-standing demand of the people of Lanja taluka and surrounding areas who had to take a long trip to either Adavali or Vilawade stations to catch a KR train.

"KR has 59 stations on its 741km route. It means an inter-station distance of around 15km which is higher than the ideal of 10 km in order to serve more people. A few new stations will allow us to run more trains and it gets easier for people to access KR," said an official.
