An airport technician was killed on Wednesday at 1:30 AM in an unfortunate accident during maintenance work at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata's Dum Dum area.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Rohit Virendra Pandey. He had been working at the Kolkata airport for three months after having been posted in Mumbai and Delhi prior to this, family members said.

The incident occurred while maintenance work for the SpiceJet ATR aircraft was going on. Rohit was working on the hydraulic flap underneath the aircraft, when it accidentally closed around his neck, trapping him right into the lower part of the aircraft. A primary probe revealed that he died after being suffocated.

Rohit's body had to be cut out from the landing gear of the aircraft with the help of the fire brigade.

The victim's elder sister, Vandana Pandey, today said that SpiceJet authorities did not inform the family about the accident. "We got to know from a friend of his. He told us that Rohit is no more," she said.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet airlines issued an official notification where they said they were "extremely saddened" at Rohit Pandey's death in an "unfortunate incident at Kolkata airport". "He was doing maintenance work in right-hand main landing gear wheel well area of a Q400 aircraft which was parked in Bay No. 32 at the airport," the statement clarified the details of the technician's death.

A complaint on "unnatural death" was filed at Airport police station, a senior police officer said.

A police team visited the spot where the accident happened, the officer said, adding forensic experts will now collect evidence.

"Our officers have reached the spot. We are talking to other staffers of the airline who were present there. We are trying to understand whether it was a technical glitch or the result of someone's callousness," the officer said.

The body will presumably be sent for postmortem soon. Further details are awaited.
