Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee is currently admitted in a Kolkata hospital, reports ANI. His condition is said to be extremely critical. 89-year-old Chatterjee was rushed to the hospital on Friday owing to kidney ailment.  According to reports, Chatterjee's health has worsened since Saturday. He is suffering from breathing trouble. Currently, the doctors have kept him on ventilator and dialysis is being done.

He suffered a massive heart attack today morning. As per doctors, " things are getting more critical, we somehow managed the situation. He is still under ventilation." From last 4 days  Chatterjee is under life support system. A team of 7 doctors are attending him currently.

"He is undergoing dialysis. In such cases it happens at times that the heart stops giving support. Chatterjee suffered a mild heart attack this morning, but was revived. He is in the ICCU and has been put on ventilation. He is responding to treatment," a senior hospital official told PTI.

Last month, the former speaker had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke.

"He has been under treatment for the past 40 days. Chatterjee was discharged from the hospital just for three days after his health showed signs of improvement. However, his condition deteriorated last Tuesday and he had to be hospitalised again," the official said.

A 10-time Lok Sabha MP, Chatterjee was a central committee member of the CPI(M), which he had joined in 1968.

He was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.

The veteran leader was, however, expelled from the CPI(M) in 2008 for refusing to resign as the Speaker after his party withdrew support to the UPA-I government.

In June this year, Somnath Chatterjee suffered a stroke and was hospitalised for a long period of time. He was released from hospital few days back. But, now he is again admitted to the hospital and is fighting for his life.

After 40 years in CPI(M), Chatterjee was expelled from CPI(M) for refusing to follow the party line as Lok Sabha speaker in 2008. He has subsequently shied away from active politics. However, Chatterjee has made his views known about contemporary political happenings from time to time. Even opposition leaders praised the way Chatterjee handed Lok Sabha proceedings during UPA 1 rule.
