Even as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at an event lashed out at private hospitals for commercialisation of services, a case of alleged medical negligence pertaining to a private hospital, was registered in Jadavpur.

Sunil Kumar Pandey, 42, a resident of South Kolkata succumbed after being admitted for a week at Medica Superspecialty Hospital following an angioplasty.

Kumar was admitted to the hospital on March 6, following a heart attack. He was kept under ventilation and an angioplasty was done on him.

Kumar's kin said that a clot on his left leg was noticed. "On March 11, we were told that it would be removed surgically but later the doctors informed us that there had been an infection. His foot from ankle down had to be amputated," said the deceased's friend.

Even after the amputation, Pandey's situation did not improve. He died early in the morning on March 13. The deceased's wife, Sujata Pandey filed a complainet against the hospital, at the Jadavpur Purba police station. Pandey's body had been sent for a postmortem. Police sources said that initially it had been observed that there was no stent in the body although the hospital had claimed that they had put a stent on Pandey and had charged the family.

In her complaint, Sujata had alleged that on March 11 the doctors were in a hurry to leave for Holi. She also said that the hospital was reluctant in sharing information about the patient to the family members.

Hospital authorities, however, denied the charges. Talking to DNA, Dr Udayan Lahiri, CEO, Medica Superspecialty Hospital said, Pandey was brought in a critical condition on March 6. "He was given all necessary initial treatment at the Emergency Ward and an angiogram showed that he had 100 per cent heart blockage. A number of tests were done and the family members were kept abreast of all the developments. Doctors had said that his left leg had gone cold and a Doppler test was done on him but that didn't help much. Later he had developed gangrene of the foot and once again a life-saving operation had to be done on him. Unfortunately we could not save him," Dr Lahiri said.

Asked about the missing stent in the postmortem report he said, "I don't know if post-mortem reports arrive so fast. However, we have system generated documentation which would prove our claims are correct. There is a cath lab film which will back our statement."

Earlier in the day, CM Banerjee had noted, "Medical care is not just another business of selling food. One should have the mentality of giving service," she said. She also said that patients' kin should not always vandalise hospitals complaining negligence. "There is a way to put forward your complaint. If you damage an MRI machine, think of several others who would be deprived of a treatment."
