Kolkata: Jadavpur University recognises third gender in admission forms

Jadavpur University has come forward to recognise the ‘third gender’. Come this academic year, and the admission forms will have a ‘third gender’ option besides the male and female options.

In a recent meeting held between several universities and higher education department, this proposal was mooted by university authorities. However, Presidency University authorities were among the first to take up this initiative, only to be carried forward by Jadavpur University.

To begin with the Arts Faculty admission forms will have the ‘third gender’ option. Educationists feel an initiative like this, will help the ‘third gender’ create a space for themselves and get a proper education background. “Admissions to the Arts Faculty begins now, so we have taken up this initiative for the Arts Faculty. We will gradually implement it across all the other Faculties,” said P K Ghosh, registrar, Jadavpur University.

This is for the first time that the third gender has got formal recognition by an educational institute in West Bengal.
