The four doctors in Kolkata who were evicted from their rented home last week because of their religion have been assured by an NGO and a Durga Puja committee that they would not have to move elsewhere

According to a report in enewsroom, the doctors are working in various government hospitals in the city. They were yelled at by a neighbor after a friend visited them last week.

One of the neighbours accosted the friend and demanded to see his identity card. When the doctors refused, the neighbors allegedly said why homes ‘should not be rented to bachelors and Muslims’.

Mohammad Aftab Alam, Mojtaba Hassan, Nasir Shaikh and Shaukat Sheikh working as house staffs in various hospitals in Kolkata however were backed by their landlord Sudipta Mitra who expressed ‘shock about the incident’.

While they were denied flats by many tenants, they were offered accommodation by Mitra. However, the neighbours had a problem with them.

The matter was resolved by NGO Sanghati Abhijan who talked to neighbours and the matter was resolved.

Flat owner Sudipta Mitra was quoted saying: “I will meet them and the people who raised certain issues on Saturday. I want to know their exact problem. I had a word with the neighbour who had objected to the group. He told me that the matter had been resolved but I personally want to meet them,” he said.

However, what was more encouraging, according to the enewsroom report was the intervention of a local Durga Puja committee.

Meanwhile the boys too overjoyed with not having to vacate the flat. “We will never have enough word to thank Dwaipayan da’s timely intervention, the local residents of Kudghat including the Puja committee, for having stood by us and making sure that we didn’t have to vacate our residence has further strengthened our hope in our democracy and spirit of Kolkata. I am sure if such interventions are made in time to iron out the differences or prejudice that exists in the society, the rise graph of hate in India will be curbed for sure,” they told enewsroom.
