Kolkata flyover tragedy: CM Mamata Banerjee takes stock of rescue operations

The West Bengal govt on Thursday announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victims' families.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the scene where a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in North Kolkata's Girish Park area on Thursday afternoon to take stock of the rescue operations.

At least 14 people were so far killed and 78 other injured in the incident that took place in the afternoon between at Ganesh Talkies between Vivekananda Road and Kalikrishna Tagore Street, confirmed the Kolkata Police.

Locals present on the scene claimed that nearly 300 people have been trapped under debris of the collapsed bridge.

Police, fire brigade, disaster management personnel, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and army personnel have been pressed into rescue operations. 

The West Bengal Government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh to next of kin to the victims and Rs 2 lakh to gravely injured people.
