Kolkata flyover tragedy: Charges watered down against construction company

Kolkata Police filed chargesheet in a city court on Tuesday in connection with the flyover collapse case that claimed 26 lives and left over 150 injured. The chargesheet mentiones that the construction company, IVRCL used inferior quality of raw materials during construction of the flyover. 

The 2,600-pages chargesheet mentiones that the raw materials used in the construction of the flyover did not comply with the Bureau of Indian Standards. While the construction company was charged for murder (302 IPC) when the case was registered, the company has been now been booked under the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (304 IPC). 

The police said that they will file a supplementary chargesheet in connection with the case after they receive two reports from RITES and National Test House (NTH). 

A portion of the under-construction Vivekananda flyover near Ganesh Talkies in Girish Park collapsed on March 31 leaving as many as 26 dead and over 150 people injured.

So far, the police have arrested 10 senior official of the Hyderabad-based construction company IVRCL. All the officials are currently in judicial custody.
