Nine months after a portion of the Vivekananda flyover collapsed, leaving as many as 27 dead and several others injured, Bengal’s Urban Development Ministry has proposed to demolish the remaining structure of the flyover.

In a meeting held between senior officials of KMDA – the government agency responsible for the maintenance of the flyover and the Urban Development Minister, Firhad Hakim, had proposed that the remaining structure of the flyover be demolished to prevent any such untoward incidents in future. “The decision is pending with the chief secretary. Once he gives a nod, we will go ahead with the clearance,” said Hakim.

On the other hand, locals residing near the flyover allege that since the collapse, they have felt the flyover trembling on several occasions and the demolition will be welcome decision. “The remaining structure is very weak. It might collapse just as one of its portions collapsed. The government must demolish the remaining structure and later construct the entire flyover,” said Sarita Jha, a local resident.

However, the government is not rushing into the decision of demolition as it would result in a loss of government funds. Sources reveal that the government had asked two agencies – RITES and IIT Kharagpur to highlight whether a demolition is required. But, both the agencies have distanced themselves from giving an opinion about the demolition.

On March 31, a portion of the under construction flyover collapsed leaving as many as 27 people dead and several others injured.

Later, three FIRs were filed by the Kolkata Police against IVRCL – the company responsible for the construction of the flyover. Several senior officials of the IVRCL were arrested by the Kolkata Police.
