City life in Kolkata has hit a snag after traffic on the Ultadanga flyover was shut down for the next three days following a crack in one of its piers.

The shutdown resulted in huge difficulties for daily passengers who commute the Hatko route and adjoining areas of Bidhannagar, as they sat waiting in massive traffic jams throughout the day.

The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate shut down the traffic for 72 hours on Tuesday after the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) reported a crack in the flyover.

Kolkata Traffic Police has directed new transit routes for the areas that have been affected by the shutdown. Here are all the traffic reroutes:

1) If one is headed towards the airport along the EM Bypass, they will now have to take the Chingrihata flyover and head towards New Town, from where they will be able to reach the Dum Dum Airport. The same is true for cars wanting to reach the city from the airport. They will have to first head towards New Town and then reach Chingrihata, from where it will be possible to access the Bypass.

2) Cars heading towards the airport from AJC Bose Road will have to take the APC Road route and reach their destination via the Shyambazar five-point crossing along the Jessore Road.

The crack was spotted yesterday night by engineers of the KMDA Inspection team.

A portion of the same flyover had broken down six years ago.

Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Firhad Hakim said that Principal Secretary Subrata Gupta will send a letter to the construction company, Mackintosh Burn Limited, who was involved in the construction of the flyover, demanding a response to the incident reported by the KMDA.
