Triggering a row, a Congress councillor on Wednesday asked his party workers to thrash policemen when under attack, as "they work for ruling Trimanool and have no morals".

Congress Councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation ward no 45, Santosh Pathak, while addressing a rally during a protest-march to the state secretariat, asked partymen to bash up police personnel if party workers are attacked.

"These police personnel don't have any moral values. Earlier they used to work for CPI(M), now they work for Trinamool. If needed, then beat the police personnel. I myself have delivered two blows when I was attacked," Pathak, the president of Burrabazar District Congress, said while addressing a rally.

The protest and the sit-in demonstration, where Pathak made the controversial remarks, were led by state Congress President Adhir Chowdhury.

When contacted, Pathak told PTI, "Yes, I have told my party workers to beat policemen as they are acting as stooges of Trinamool Congress. Today we had a rally in front of Nabanna and our vehicles carrying our supporters were stopped by the police in spite of our repeated requests to allow the vehicles. But they did not pay heed. Is it not partiality by the police?"

Pathak, a Congress man has unsuccessfully contested in the Chowranghee Assembly by-poll last month, by securing the third position. The seat was won by Trinamool Congress candidate Nayana Bandopadhyay.
