Debolina was suffering from congenital hydrocephalus, a rare disorder where fluids accumulate inside the cranial cavities, putting pressure on the brain
A 25-year-old lady passed away in Kolkata on Wednesday. But in her death, she gave a new lease of life to three individuals. A private hospital in the city facilitated the process of transplant of critical organs of Debolina Ghosh, who was brain-dead for a while. Kolkata Police ensured that a green-corridor is created so that the organs can be whisked away to its desired locations.
Debolina was suffering from congenital hydrocephalus, a rare disorder where fluids accumulate inside the cranial cavities, putting pressure on the brain. AMRI hospital facilitated the harvesting of several organs. Her heart was harvested for transplantation to a recipient admitted at Fortis hospital in Kolkata. Both her kidneys and the liver went to the state-run SSKM Hospital, while her eyes went to Shankar Netralaya. However, due to some complications, the liver couldn't be transplanted to the recipient.
Debalina was admitted to AMRI Hospital-Dhakuria in Kolkata on Sunday last week. He was in an unconscious state and was rushed to ICU. CT scan of her brain showed she suffered from acute hydrocephalus. Despite all attempts, her condition did not improve and she was declared clinically brain dead on Wednesday at around 6:30 pm.
Debolina had undergone acerebral shunt procedure at the age of 2-and-a-half-years and spent most of her life with it. She, however, finally succumbed to the disorder. While Debolina’s family members had wished to donate her organs, senior doctors at AMRI Hospitals provided them necessary information on the process and after receiving their consent, the process was initiated with support from the Regional Organ Transplantation Organisation (ROTO) and the state health department.
Mr Rupam Barua,Group CEO of AMRI Hospitals, said, “Debolina Ghosh passed away and she was declared brain dead. We were communicating regularly with family members and they were also looking at options on what to do. Dr SK Todi, the head of our trauma care unit, along with our consultants also counselled them on various aspects of organ donation. After our internal committee finally declared her brain dead, Debolina’s parents expressed their willingness to go ahead with the donations and we started the process.”
Mr Barua added that while three hospitals in Kolkata have the necessary permits for heart transplantation, initially, Debolina’s heart was supposed to go to another private hospital but due to mismatch in parameters, it finally went to another private hospital. “Her parents wanted to ensure the Debolina continues to live on through others who will receive the much-needed organs. We are proud to have played a part in their noble gesture,” Mr Barua said.
45-year old Anita Ghosh, a resident of Hoogly, Dhaniyakhali has been suffering from kidney problem since January 2018.Debolina’s one kidney has been transplanted in her body. Debolina's another kidney was given to Hooghly's Keya Dan. She is only 21-years old and has suffering from kidney ailment from January this year.
Resident of Berhampore, Tanaya Pandit got Debolina's heart and has been transplanted successfully. Unfortunately, due to some complications, Debolina's live got damaged and the wait increased for 38-year-old Joypratim Ghosh who is suffering since 2014.
Debolina's parents wanted her to be alive through these recipients. Debolina may have passed away but her legacy will continue to linger.
