Online cab service providers are reportedly being waylaid and blocked by members of the regular taxi unions, say media reports. A report in Malayala Manorama adds that the regular taxi providers have been angered by the fact that their revenues have dropped due to the online cab service providers.

The police are yet to take action about these organised assaults against online taxi drivers. The motor vehicles department has also not acted on this yet, adds the report.

There are more than 3000 taxi drivers who are part of the online cab service provider network in Kochi at this point. Many of these attacks are going unreported at this point, state media reports.

Recently, the police and Motor Vehicle Department authorities said that some Uber taxis were found to be operating locally without relevant permits. A report in the Hindu quoted an official as saying, “Section 66 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 stipulates that vehicles need to have permits for commercial operations. For operating taxi services in Kerala, fitness certificates, driver badges and permits are a must and web-based taxis are no exception.”

There has been a threat by the local taxi drivers unions to block the operation of Uber and Ola cabs in Kochi
