Know about Justice NV Ramana - the man who is set to become new CJI

Justice Ramana will assume charge as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April 24, a day after the retirement of incumbent CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde.

Justice NV Ramana has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind. He will take oath on April 24. CJI SA Bobde is due to retire on April 23 and last month he had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor. 

Justice Ramana will assume charge as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April 24, a day after the retirement of incumbent CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde.

Justice Ramana, 63, was part of a bench that ruled that suspension of the Internet in Jammu and Kashmir should be reviewed immediately. He was also part of the panel of judges which held that the Chief Justice's office comes under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

About Justice Ramana

Justice Ramana was born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on August 27, 1957.

Justice Ramana will be the Supreme Court Chief Justice for a year and four months. He will be in office until August 26, 2022. 

He will be the second Chief Justice of India from the state of Andhra Pradesh. Justice K Subba Rao was the ninth Chief Justice of India from 1966-67.

It was in 2014 that Justice Ramana was elevated to the Supreme Court. Earlier, he was serving as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

Justice Ramana has nearly a four-decade-long career. He has practiced in the Andhra High Court, central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals.

He has also been a lawyer of the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service and election matters.

He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service, and inter-state river laws, as per his profile.

He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000.

He functioned as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013.

He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2013 and as a judge in the top court in 2014.
