Modi said that the contribution of great people like Maharaja Suheldev for the nation cannot be forgotten. He added that it is gross injustice to the great people like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Baba Saheb Ambedkar and many other great leaders. He also mentioned about the negligence of Martyrs of Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur.

Maharaja Suheldev is one of the most revered Hindu heroes and a warrior king from the eleventh century - known for having mounted a fierce fight against the army of Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masud and defeated him.

Who is Maharaja Suheldev, whom history forgot?

According to Mirat-e-Masoodi of the 17th century, Maharaja Suheldev was the king of Shravasti during the 11th century.

Maharaja Suheldev defeated Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew Ghazi Syed Salar Masood in a battle.

A school teacher from 1940, Guru Sahai Dixit Dwidin's poem 'Sri Suhail Bawani' says Suheldev was a Jain King who protected the Hindu culture.

People of Rajbhar and Pasi community, who has a significant impact in many districts of Purvanchal consider him their descendant.

As per myths and folklore, Suheldev is best remembered for the battle he fought on the banks of the Kaudiyala River in the year 1033 AD.

This was fought between Suheldev and Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew Syed Salar Masood Ghazi.

When Salar reached Bahraich, Tharu, Banjara kings as well as the common people fought the war on behalf of Suheldev. Salar Masood was killed in this war.

According to British Gazetteer, Suheldev was a Rajput who fought against Muslim rulers by forming a union of 21 kings.

Bahraich historian Dr Rajkishore told in an interview that King Suheldev is a great hero whose history is very difficult to find.

Although from the Awadh and Terai region to Purvanchal in Uttar Pradesh, there are many stories of his valor in myths and legends, there is no consensus about his caste, some call him Rajbhar and some say he is from Pasi community.
