Charges under the National Security Act have been filed against Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Monday when he was being produced in a court in Assam's Dibrugarh district. He was rearrested by Nagaon police while in court. He was earlier arrested under the sedition charges on September 13 for a speech at Moran in Golaghat district.

When he was produced at the Dibrugarh sessions court, the judicial magistrate received a letter from the deputy commissioner from Nagaon stating the charges under the NSA that were filed against Gogoi, who has been a vocal critic of the BJP government.

On September 13, he was picked up from his house at Golaghat for making a speech at Moran on charges of instigating people. "It is time for the people of Assam to leave behind their hengdangs (Ahom-era swords) and pick up AK-47s," Gogoi had said.

Over 33 cases were filed against the farmer leader, of which 12 cases warranted the invoking of the NSA stated the letter from the DC Nagaon. The cases mentioned were filed across the state in different periods of time, including the 2016 case where Gogoi was arrested for inciting illegal settlers in Kaziranga, leading to police firing and the death of two people.
