Over 35,000 farmers have reached Mumbai ahead of their planned protest outside Vidhan Bhawan.

These farmers have completed a journey of 180km that started from Nashik. As they entered Mumbai, the CPM today took to Twitter to support the ‘Long March’. In a series of tweets, the party said that ‘you can cut all the flowers but you cant stop the spring from coming!’

‘They heed to our hunger cry. We ignore their outcry,’ the party said in another tweet.

The protestors, many of them whom are tribals from Nashik, are pressing for the execution of the state government’s loan waiver scheme and remunerative pricing for agricultural produce and milk.

The Devendra Fadnavis government has been under immense pressure after continuous protests by farmers who alleged that he did not honour assurances given to farmers for a farm loan waiver of Rs. 34,000 crore in June last year.

The protests comes at a time when the Assembly is in session. There were some discontent in political circles as the state government sidelined the senior BJP ministers and choose the junior BJP minister Girish Mahajan as the government representative to break the ice with the agitated farmers.

“Girish Mahajan is a close aid and old friend of CM Fadanvis. Mahajan has been promoted against the estranged BJP leader Eknath Khadse. Fadnavis and Mahajan, both share the good rapport, therefore, Fadnavis has chosen Mahajan to initiate the talk with the protesters' farmers and find out the solutions,” an observer said.

"Farmers have been betrayed by the BJP-led government. They in large numbers are marching towards Mumbai to press their demands. We will not break our gherao in Mumbai unless our demands are fulfilled,” said Ashok Dhavale, President of Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha.
