In a major development in the sensational kidney scam, the Chief Executive Officer and the medical director of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, along with three other doctors, were arrested on Tuesday night by Powai police.
The arrests were made under Sections 12 and 21 of The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. Confirming the arrests, Deven Bharti, joint police commissioner of law and order, said: "Based on the report of the appropriate authority today (on Tuesday) at 8.30 pm, the Powai police arrested five accused-doctors, of which one is chief executive officer and another is medical director of the Hiranandani Hospital."

The exact role of the CEO and the medical director in the scam that rocked the city was not elaborated upon by the police, but details are likely to emerge in the coming days.
The scam had come to light last month when a social worker received information about the illegal organ transplant and lodged a complaint with the Powai police. The sleuths swung into action and stopped the kidney transplant procedure before it happened.
Shobha Thakur, from Anand in Gujarat, had agreed to present herself as Brijkishore Jaiswal's wife at the hospital for a kidney swap, since only blood relatives or immediate kin are allowed to donate organs. Jaiswal has sought anticipatory bail. Thakur was arrested on Monday and was produced before the court on Tuesday.
So far, the police have arrested 13 persons in the scam, including the woman who had offered her kidney.
