A Jain leader, who was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified men here, was on Saturday found abandoned on the roadside in Ludhiana, police said.

Jain Guru Gani Ranjendra Vijay alleged that he was kidnapped while on his way to his ashram in north Delhi's Roop Nagar.

He said that he was stopped by an acquaintance on the pretext of discussing an issue.

The religious leader was then administered some sedative and kidnapped, a police officer said.

A team of Delhi Police was already on the way to Ludhiana when they were informed by their counterparts there about the victim being found.

The Jain leader told the police that he was thrashed by the kidnappers and had lost consciousness.

When he gained consciousness, he found himself on the roadside and informed the police after borrowing a cell phone from a passer-by.

The Ludhiana Police then took him to a hospital.

Police said there were no visible injury marks on his body, adding that the guru is on his way to Delhi.
