The body of a Class-7 student, who was kidnapped from near his residence on July 12, was found in a decomposed state behind his Nalasopara school on Wednesday afternoon. The 12-year-old boy, Nitish Tiwari, was apparently smothered to death as a consequence of his parents approaching the police against the kidnappers' stern warning.

A student of St Lukes English High School, Nitish went to play football on a ground near his Bilal Pada residence on July 12 as it was a Sunday holiday. However, when he didn't return home for a very long time, his father got worried and approached the Tulinj police to file a kidnap case.

"As soon as my son went missing, we approached the police only to be told to wait for two hours before filing any complaint. As we waited, we got a threat call saying our son was with them and that he would be killed if we complained to the police," said the slain boy's father Manoj Tiwari, an investment banker.

While threatening Tiwari on phone, the kidnapper apparently did not make any ransom demand. However, the caller told Tiwari to wait for a second call, the bereaved father said, adding, "With deep faith in the cops, I went to the police station again and told them about three people whom I suspected to be behind the kidnap. But the police didn't initiate prompt action."

Tiwari blamed the police for their lackadaisical approach which cost him his son's life. "If the police had not delayed investigation, my son would be alive today," he said, trying to hold back his tears.

On the other hand, the police are suspecting an insider's hand in the kidnap-cum-murder. "After we started our investigation, we noticed the kidnapper was getting detailed information about our moves. As our probe proceeded, the culprits developed cold feet and, fearing arrest, they might have killed him," said a police officer.

Rubbishing allegations that the police was lax in this case, Bajirao Kalantre, senior inspector of Tulinj police station, said, "As soon as the parents approached us, we registered their complaint. We formed teams and launched a manhunt. But after three days, we found that the kid was murdered... We have taken a few people into custody and are planning to quiz some relatives and friends of the slain boy's family," said Kalantre.

About Nitish, the playful boy
Nitish was a bright student of St Lukes English High School, Nalasopara. He loved his school and never missed a lecture. He was in Class 7. "Who knew Nitish would be found dead behind the school he loved so much. The perpetrators must be brought to book," said Tiwari.
