The attack by unidentified gunmen on a Trinamool Congress party office in Kharagpur, West Bengal on Wednesday resulted in the death of TMC workers Srinivas Naidu and V Dharma and also left three others injured.

TMC General Secretary Subrata Bakshi has asked the police to look into the role of local MLA and BJP state President Dilip Ghosh and investigate whether the assailants were local goons or had been brought in from outside. "It is an attempt to create unrest in Bengal. The leader of an Opposition party who has won from Kharagpur has been flexing muscles across the state. We have requested the police to look into it,” he said. Ghosh is the local MLA from Kharagpur Sadar assembly seat.

However, Rahul Sinha, BJP national secretary and former state president said that it was a fallout of an internal clash of the TMC party. “They fight among themselves for power and money. This will finish half the party and the other half will be behind bars,” Sinha said talking to DNA.

The incident took place at Kharagpur’s Malancha Road in West Midnapore district at about 2.30 pm on Wednesday. Eye-witnesses said that five persons came in a Maruti Omni van, hurled bombs outside the TMC party office, before going in, opening fire and then fleeing within minutes.

The two victims Srinivas Naidu (27) and V Dharma (25) who sustained serious injuries on their heads and stomachs, were brought to a private hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Srinivas was reportedly the right-hand man of mafia don Basab Rambabu. After Rambabu was jailed on charges of murdering the sons of a CPIM leader, Srinivas started taking over his empire slowly. In the meantime, many criminal cases were filed against him as well and he too was jailed on charges of robbery. In 2010 he managed to get out on bail. Naidu's wife, councillor Puja Naidu had won in the civic elections from ward 18 in 2015 on a BJP ticket, but later defected to TMC. Sources said that TMC leaders had used Srinivas, who was once close to the BJP, to break the party organisation there and as a result many other councillors had followed suit after Puja. District police officials said that there had been a similar attempt on Srinivas’ life about two months ago, but he had escaped.

“We are investigating the matter. The offenders, as we have found out, had their face covered with masks,” said a senior police official.
