Kerala to tackle plastic waste menace by converting it to fuel

The two plants will come up in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram

The Clean Kerala Company in the state will set up two plants that will convert plastic waste to a kerosene-like fuel. Initiated by the state government, these plants will consume upto to 10 tons of plastic day and clean up the state as well.

According to a report in Malayala Manorama, the two plants will come up in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Majority of the waste produced in Kerala is said to be plastic-based and the government’s initiative will produce fuel that can even power vehicles.

The process by which plastic is converted to fuel is called pyrolysis. It’s reported that the fuel would cost less than Rs 25 per litre to make and can be used in manufacturing industries as well as cement and steel.

Companies in Bengaluru and Chennai have applied for the government tender to set up the plants. Three acres would need to be allotted for each plant. The company that runs the plant will get 25% of the sales states the report.
