Kerala: Kannur man who joined ISIS in Syria killed

Abdul Manaf, a resident of Valapattanam in Kannur district, was killed while fighting for the terror group in November last year in Syria.

A man from Kerala who left India to join the Islamic State terror group in Syria has been killed, the police said.

30-year-old Abdul Manaf, a resident of Valapattanam in Kannur district, was killed while fighting for the terror group in November last year in Syria, according to an Indian Express report. The news was relayed to the family by another man from Kannur, who is also currently part of ISIS. 

Police believe Manaf was a worker of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI). He was accused in the murder case of CPM worker Bineesh in 2009. Manaf left country around 2-3 years back to join ISIS . It is reported that Manaf managed to sneak into Syria with a fake passport and had links with Valluva Kandy Shajahan.  Shahjahan also tried to enter Syria with fake details and was deported from Turkey and later arrested by Delhi Police. 

In November last year, police confirmed that six youngsters from Kerala's Kannur district have joined IS in Syria. Police said that these people were active workers of PFI in Kerala. According to some estimates around 100 Indian have left to fight for the Islamic State mainly in Syria and Iraq. Most of these cases have been reported to police by the families of these youths.  In a separate case, two persons were arrested on January, 2018 for helping a Muslim man 'forcibly' convert a Kerala woman in an attempt to sell her to Islamic State terrorists in Syria.
