Kerala Islamic State case: Woman sentenced to seven years

Zahid was convicted in a case of illegal migration of 14 people from Kasaragod in Kerala to Afghanistan in 2016 for joining the Islamic State.

In the Kerala Islamic State recruitment case, a Kochi court on Saturday sentenced 30-year-old Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid, a native of Bihar, to seven-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on her.

Zahid was convicted in a case of illegal migration of 14 people from Kasaragod in Kerala to Afghanistan in 2016 for joining the Islamic State.

Zahid, who hails from Muroul village in Sitamarhi district Bihar was arrested from the New Delhi International Airport on July 30, 2016 just before leaving for Kabul along with her child with the intention of joining her husband and coconspirator Abdul Rashid in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The case was originally registered in Kerala and was reregistered at National Investigation Agency police station in Kochi on August 24, 2016 .

Investigation by NIA revealed that the main accused Abdul Rashid Abdulla had recruited the other accused persons, including Zahid, by conducting classes since Ramadan, 2015, in support of IS and its ideology of violent jihad.

Zahid was to join her husband and coconspirator Rashid in IS-controlled territory in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, which the accused persons consider as part of the Khorasan Wilayat of the Islamic State.

Absconder Rashid had raised funds for the terrorist organization and transferred such funds, while being in Afghanistan, to Zahid, who had utilized it for her activities intended at supporting the terrorist organization.

Zahid had got acquainted with Rashid while working in Peace International School at Kottakkal in Malappuram district, Kerala and they had later got married secretly.

On January 27, 2017, NIA had filed a charge-sheet against accused Rashid and Zahid and the trial of the case had commenced on November 9, .2017 and the prosecution had examined 52 witnesses through whom 115 documents and 29 material objects were exhibited, while the defence had examined one witness.

According to the NIA, main accused Abdul Rashid Abdulla had recruited Zahid and other accused persons in 2015 after conducting classes in support of IS and its ideology of violent jihad.
