A student in Kerala was allegedly beaten up by his college seniors for colouring his hair and has been admitted to the Kottayam General Hospital with serious injuries.

A report in Malayala Manorama states that that the victim is Joel John Varghese (18), a first-year mechanical engineering student at the Kottayam Institute of Technology and Science (KITS) at Pallikkathode. He is reported to have been beaten up by four fourth-year students. Following a complaint, the police have registered a case.

The students had reportedly warned Joel last week to get rid of the hair colour, a demand he had complied with. However, some traces of the colour still remained which bothered them. On Monday evening, when he was heading home, the students dragged him to the parking lot and attacked him, the report says.

According to the police complaint, Joel was attacked with a razor blade on his cheek and hit with a stick on his face and chest. They let him go when he started to bleed.

Joel has filed complaints with the District Superintendent of Police and the Pallikkathode police station. The police are said to be investigating.
